Afshan regularly appears in the District Court on a wide range of criminal matters, and assists with criminal proceedings in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal.
Prior to MC, Afshan studied at both the University of Auckland and AUT. She has interned at MC, Auckland Council, the Royal Commission Inquiry into the Christchurch Mosque Attacks and for a barrister specialising in family and employment law. Afshan was also President of the South Asian Law Students Association in 2021, which won Best Law Club at the University of Auckland that year, and co-founded the AUT Muslim Students Association in 2017.
Recent Cases & Achievements
Afshan wrote her Honours dissertation on how New Zealand’s anti-terrorism law marginalises Muslim communities, and, in particular, how the 2019 Christchurch Mosque Shootings could have been prevented had the law focussed on all forms of terrorism.
Afshan has also written academic papers on hate speech laws and reform versus the right to freedom of speech.
Afshan assisted with meeting victims and compiling submissions outlining victims views to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the Christchurch Mosque Shootings during her internship with Just Community.
