Sam Teppett

Sam is a prosecutor in the Crown Specialist Group with a background in the prosecution of serious crime and regulatory prosecutions.

Sam frequently prosecutes criminal jury trials on behalf of the Crown in the High Court and District Court.  He has a particular interest in organised crime including large scale drug offending.  He also regularly prosecutes financial crime, violent and sexual offending, including homicide.  Sam also has experience in the civil jurisdiction, including applications for judicial review and applications under the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act 2004.

Sam regularly appears for the New Zealand Police in the Youth Court and for the New Zealand Police on appeals to the High Court. He has acted for the Crown in the Court of Appeal.

Sam began his professional life as a junior barrister for Ron Mansfield QC.  In that role he worked on homicide cases, serious drug offending and organised crime, fraud, violent and sexual offending.  Sam also assisted charities in proceedings under the Charities Act 2005 and would assist clients with proceedings under the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009.  He also assisted clients in disciplinary tribunals.  Sam would regularly appear as junior counsel in jury trials in the District Court and High Court throughout New Zealand.  He would also assist with appeals to the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

  • Prosecuted a multi-accused four-week High Court jury trial involving the importation and supply of cocaine from central America.  The offenders were sentenced on the basis that they successfully imported at least four kilograms of cocaine.
  • Prosecuted a murder which proceeded to a week-long involvement hearing under the Criminal Procedure (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act 2003 where the issues were self-defence and defence of another.
  • Involved in a multi-accused four week High Court jury trial involving the importation and supply of 30 kilograms of cocaine concealed within an ornamental horse head.  This was New Zealand’s largest importation of cocaine at the time.
  • Involved in a multi-accused six-week High Court jury trial involving serious violent gang related offending.
