Nick Malarao


Nick leads Meredith Connell’s Insolvency, Recoveries and Enforcement team, the largest such practice in the country. He specialises in tax, company law, civil enforcement and litigation.

Nick has an 18 year track record of maximising returns for creditors and insolvency practitioners in the most efficient and effective manner possible, using the full range of legal and commercial options available.

Nick has also represented Inland Revenue and the other Crown bodies in a wide range of significant civil actions and criminal prosecutions at every level of the court system. In 2018, Nick sat on the government’s expert Tax Working Group, chaired by Sir Michael Cullen, which considered ways to improve the structure, fairness and balance of the tax system.

Nick is a member of RITANZ and is regularly invited to speak at insolvency law conferences and seminars.

Represented Inland Revenue at the coalface in high stakes civil litigation, complex prosecutions or negotiating outcomes with commercial entities and high net worth individuals.

Expert in company law, and in particular the law relating to directors’ duties, having overseen more directors’ duties proceedings in the High Court than anyone else in New Zealand.  

Has assisted Inland Revenue in using innovative solutions such as remedies found outside taxation-specific legislation, for example in the Companies Act and the Property Law Act, to pursue and secure the payment of outstanding tax debts on behalf of the Crown. 

Experienced in insolvency, recoveries and civil enforcement, advising and representing liquidators, receivers and creditors on securities, property, company and insolvency law.
