About

Matthew (Ngāti Whātua, Te Uri-o-Hau) is a Special Counsel in MC’s Criminal Specialist Group, and is a highly experienced trial and appellate lawyer. Having worked for over 20 years as a prosecutor in Australia, Matthew was appointed Senior Counsel in 2015 and Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions for the Northern Territory of Australia in 2018. In 2019 he was elected President of the Australian Association of Crown Prosecutors, a position he held until joining MC.

Matthew has appeared as lead counsel across a wide array of criminal matters including homicides, serious sexual offending, organised crime and complex fraud. He also has extensive experience in the appellate jurisdiction having regularly appeared in the Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia.

For six years, Matthew was Sexual Assault Senior Crown Prosecutor for Australia’s Northern Territory, which included training lawyers on behalf of the Northern Territory Law Society, Australian Federal Police, and for a national body for child interviewers. 

Matthew has been invited to become a partner of MC in 2023/24, subject to meeting Law Society requirements.
