Matthew Nathan

Special Counsel

Matthew is a Special Counsel in Meredith Connell’s Criminal Specialist Group, and is a highly experienced trial and appellate lawyer. Having worked for over 20 years as a prosecutor in Australia, Matthew was appointed Senior Counsel in 2015 and Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions for the Northern Territory of Australia in 2018. In 2019 he was elected President of the Australian Association of Crown Prosecutors, a position he held until joining Meredith Connell.

Matthew has appeared as lead counsel across a wide array of criminal matters including homicides, serious sexual offending, organised crime and complex fraud. He also has extensive experience in the appellate jurisdiction having regularly appeared in the Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia.

Matthew is of Ngāti Whātua descent.

  • Appeared before the Full Court of the High Court of Australia in IMM v The Queen which became the leading Australian decision on the interpretation of probative value within propensity evidence.
  • Acted for the Crown in two of the four existing cases in the Northern Territory where indefinite sentences were imposed due to the severity of the offending.
  • Prosecuted the first recognised act of terrorism in the Northern Territory.
