About

Matthew acts for professional disciplinary regulators in disciplinary tribunal proceedings, conducts High Court civil litigation and judicial review proceedings on behalf of the Crown, and appears on a range of other public law matters. He also appears on behalf of the Crown on criminal proceedings with a focus on appellate work.

Matthew began his career as research counsel to the Office of the Chief Coroner before spending four years at MC. He then moved to Crown Law as Crown Counsel, advising and litigating on behalf of government departments before returning to MC.

Recent Cases & Achievements

Commissioner of Police v B [2023] NZHC 2824

Acted for the Commissioner of Police to obtain take-down orders in respect of hacked information.

Higgs v Minister of Immigration [2022] NZHC 1333 and Tesimale v District Court at Manukau [2021] NZHC 2599

Acted for the Crown in challenges to COVID-19 border closures including a large-scale challenge alleging discrimination arising from border closures, and the prolonged detention in prison of a person served with a deportation order but unable to be deported due to border closures.

Acted for the New Zealand Law Society and Real Estate Agents Authority at first instance and in High Court appeals.
