Matthew acts for professional disciplinary regulators, conducts High Court immigration proceedings on behalf of the Crown, and appears on a range of other public law matters. He also appears on behalf of the Crown on criminal proceedings with a focus on appellate work.

Matthew began his career as research counsel to the Office of the Chief Coroner before spending four years at MC. He then moved to Crown Law as Crown Counsel, advising and litigating on behalf of government departments before returning to MC.

  • A v District Court at Manukau [2021] NZHC 744 and Tesimale v District Court at Manukau [2021] NZHC 2599: Counsel for the Crown in judicial review challenges to warrants of commitment under the Immigration Act 2009, including issues of prolonged detention due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Acting for a range of professional regulators in disciplinary tribunal proceedings and related High Court appeals and applications for judicial review.
  • Conducting criminal prosecution and appellate work on behalf of the Crown in the District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal.
