About

Dennis is involved in criminal prosecutions brought on behalf of the Crown as well as various government and regulatory agencies. 

In addition to conducting jury trials, Dennis has appeared in the District and High Court on a wide range of prosecution issues. He also provides legal advice and support to a number of different government departments, and appears in court on regulatory litigation matters.

Before joining MC in 2018, Dennis worked as a criminal defence barrister for the Public Defence Service.

Recent Cases & Achievements

WorkSafe v Whakaari Management Limited and Ors

Prosecution against 13 defendants arising out of the Whakaari | White Island eruption.

R v Spence [2020] NZDC 7773

First successful prosecution in New Zealand for offending against s 138A of the Companies Act 1993 brought by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Operation Whitethorn

Successful NZ Customs prosecution against three defendants, including one who went to trial, involving importation of approximately 20 million uncustomed cigarettes.

WorkSafe v Gregory Smith and Gas Unlimited Limited [2020] NZDC 26446

Favourable outcome in prosecution of gasfitter for house explosion on Marble Court, Christchurch in 2019.
