Dennis Dow


Dennis is an associate in the Regulatory branch of the Crown Specialist team. 

He is involved in criminal prosecutions brought on behalf of the Crown as well as various government and regulatory agencies. 

In addition to conducting jury trials, Dennis has appeared in the District and High Court on a wide range of prosecution issues.  Dennis also provides legal advice and support to a number of different government departments, and appears in court on regulatory litigation matters.

Before joining Meredith Connell in 2018, Dennis worked as a criminal defence barrister for the Public Defence Service. 

WorkSafe v Whakaari Management Limited and Ors

  • WorkSafe’s ongoing prosecution against 13 defendants arising out of the Whakaari | White Island eruption.

R v Spence [2020] NZDC 7773

  • First successful prosecution in New Zealand for offending against s 138A of the Companies Act 1993 brought by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Operation Whitethorn

  • Successful NZ Customs prosecution against three defendants, including one who went to trial, involving importation of approximately 20 million uncustomed cigarettes

WorkSafe v Gregory Smith and Gas Unlimited Limited [2020] NZDC 26446

  • Favourable outcome in prosecution of gasfitter for house explosion on Marble Court, Christchurch in 2019.
