Senior Solicitor

Dennis is a senior solicitor in the Regulatory branch of the Crown Specialist team.  He is involved in criminal prosecutions brought on behalf of the Crown, as well as various government and regulatory agencies.  Before joining Meredith Connell in 2018, Dennis worked as a criminal defence barrister for the Public Defence Service, appearing on a wide range of criminal matters in the District Court.  Dennis has also conducted appeals in the High Court and has appeared as junior counsel in the Court of Appeal.

  • WorkSafe’s prosecution against 13 defendants arising out of the Whakaari | White Island eruption.
  • R v Spence [2020] NZDC 7773 – first prosecution in New Zealand for offending against s 138A of the Companies Act 1993.
  • Operation Whitethorn – Customs prosecution involving importation of approximately 20 million uncustomed cigarettes.
  • WorkSafe v Gregory Smith and Gas Unlimited Limited [2020] NZDC 26446 – prosecution of gasfitter for house explosion on Marble Court, Christchurch in 2019.
