Ben Finn

Ben works primarily as a prosecutor, with particular experience in fraud and drugs prosecutions. 

Prior to joining Meredith Connell, Ben worked at another major NZ law firm in its litigation team focusing on civil and commercial litigation. He has also worked in London in the Proceeds of Crime Units of the Crown Prosecution Service on litigation involving the restraint and forfeiture of the proceeds of crime, often involving amounts in the millions of pounds. 

Since joining Meredith Connell, Ben has prosecuted in excess of 60 jury trials in the District and High Courts, the majority as sole counsel for the Crown. He appears in Court regularly for criminal hearings of all kinds and is classified as Senior Crown Counsel.  

Between August 2012 and July 2013, Ben was seconded to the Serious Fraud Office, where he worked as an investigating lawyer on several high profile serious and complex fraud cases. 

Ben also acts for the Auckland SPCA and acts for the Financial Markets Authority, including advising and acting on a significant finance company prosecution brought following the collapse of the finance company sector. 

  • Prosecuted in excess of 60 jury trials, the majority as sole counsel for the Crown.
  • Acted as junior counsel in a successful drugs prosecution of six defendants in a trial at the Auckland High Court, and at appeal. (R v Chen.)
  • Acted as junior counsel in a successful drugs prosecution of seven defendant prosecution drugs trial at the Auckland High Court and in the Court of Appeal. (Gilfedder v R.)
  • Acted as sole counsel in High Court pre-trial judgment in a drugs trial, granting the Crown's application to lead surveillance evidence obtained via a covert camera. The decision was affirmed in the Court of Appeal, with leave to appeal to the Supreme Court declined. (R v LoriganLorigan v R.)
