About

Alex acts on behalf of the Commissioner of Police and the Crown. He began his career at a large Auckland commercial law firm before joining a boutique London litigation firm where he worked on tax litigation and commercial dispute resolution. 

Alex is experienced dealing with government agencies (IRD, FMA, HMRC) and acting for both individuals and corporates. 

Recent Cases & Achievements

Appearing for the Crown in the Court of Appeal opposing the sentence appeal of a repeat child sex offender.

Defending a high net worth individual in commercial litigation proceedings worth £140m concerning his disengagement from, and alleged liability to, his former company (of which he was the CEO).

Acting for a group of 14 large corporates in High Court proceedings against HMRC in the Franked Investment Income Group litigation order (concerning whether or not historical tax payments in respect of dividend payments to parent companies were unlawful).

Acting for an investment company in New Zealand in proceedings against the Commissioner of Inland Revenue in respect of whether its interest payments to a related party constituted a tax avoidance arrangement.
