Alex began working as a lawyer at a large Auckland commercial law firm where he worked in both the tax and commercial litigation teams. After four years Alex moved to London where he worked for a boutique litigation firm, Joseph Hage Aaronson LLP, on tax litigation and commercial dispute resolution.
Alex is experienced dealing with government agencies (IRD, FMA, HMRC) and acting for individuals and corporates.
- Defending a high net worth individual in commercial litigation proceedings worth £140m concerning his disengagement from, and alleged liability to, his former company (of which he was the CEO).
- Acting for a group of 14 large corporates in High Court proceedings against HMRC in the Franked Investment Income Group litigation order (concerning whether or not historical tax payments in respect of dividend payments to parent companies were unlawful).
- Acting for an investment company in New Zealand in proceedings against the Commissioner of Inland Revenue in respect of whether its interest payments to a related party constituted a tax avoidance arrangement.
